O Lord, baptize our hearts into a sense of the needs and conditions of all.
~ George Fox (1624-91)
Many of our outreach activities are initiated and coordinated by the Outreach Ministry. This committee meets monthly to discuss and take action to serve those in need.
This program trains parishioners and our neighbors to tutor children from East Silver Spring Elementary School. The tutors work with the students on either Wednesday or Thursday afternoons or Saturday mornings at the church.
The English as a Second Language (ESL) Tutoring Program trains parishioners and our neighbors to teach English to adults. Tutors conduct classes at a variety of times during the week at the church.
This program trains parishioners and our neighbors to teach Spanish speakers to read. Tutors must be able to speak and read Spanish.
Members of the parish assist with programs sponsored by CMMC, such as the Congregation-Based Shelter, the Hunger Walk, the Hunger Drive, and the Interfaith Clothes Closet. Go to the CMMC web site for details.
AIM is a broad-based, nonpartisan, multi-issue coalition of religious organizations in Montgomery County. It works for social justice for all residents of Montgomery County. Go to the AIM web site for details.
The church collects emergency food and delivers it to Adventist Community Services, 501 Sligo Avenue, Silver Spring. Parishioners are encouraged to bring nonperishable food to church each week to be distributed to neighbors in need.
The Church of the Ascension was honored by the Points of Light Foundation for its ESL and tutoring programs. The Daily Point of Light Award, "honoring those who have made a commitment to secure for all Americans -- especially young people -- the fundamental resources needed to lead a productive life," was given on November 29, 2004.
Our outreach ministry extends abroad through financial and other support we provide to Ascension's companion parishes in Liberia and South Africa.
