Ascension is a community committed to reaching out to those in our surrounding community who have educational needs, require assistance for dailing living, and/or are victims of oppression and injustice.
Among our local outreach ministries are:
We are a member of AIM (Action in Montgomery) (http://aim.org) which focuses on ministering to those in our community impacted by such issues as THE DREAM ACT, affordble housing, pedestrian safety, and youth protection.
Monthy we offer the Mama Maybelle & Friends Variety Show at Springvale Terrace, a local assisted living and nursing facility. We also provide pastoral care to residents and their families in times of crisis and death.
Monthly Casserole Ministry with Shepherd's Table, Silver Spring (http://shepherdstable.org.) On the first Sunday of each month, Ascension parishioners donated casseroles to be taken to Shepherd's Table, a feeding program for the poor and homeless. Recipes and pans are provided.
We contribute a week of meals to the Community Based Shelter in Rockville, MD (a shelter for homeless women.)
We participate yearly in Capital Pride (http://capitalpride.org) as part of a diocesan team, seeking justice for LGBT brothers and sisters and their families.
Through the generosity of parishioners, the Rector's Discretionary Fund and the Deacon's Discretionary Fund is able to provide resources to those who need food, medicine, and eviction relief.
These are just some of our local outreach ministries.
Ascension Church has global outreach ministries.
We are members of NRCAT (National Religious Coalition Against Torture) http://nrcat.org. This social justice ministry urges politicians and nations to outlaw the use of torture. Several times a year, members of Ascension attend anti-torture rallies and we actively support petitions and other efforts against torture.
We have an active Green Committee who keeps us aware of environmental issues and stewardship. Throughout the year, this committee promotes several projects to help Ascension be a "green church."
We have companion relationships with churches in Honduras, South Africa, and Liberia. Through these relationshisp we offer our prayers, resources, and sometimes take work trips to help our brothers and sisters in these communities.
These are some of our global outreach ministries.
