LOCAL OUTREACH

Ascension is a community committed to reaching out to those in our surrounding community who have educational needs, require assistance for dailing living, and/or are victims of oppression and injustice.

Among our local outreach ministries are:

Weekly we offer a Holy Eucharist service to the residents of Springvale Terrace, a local assisted living and nursing facility. We also provide pastoral care to residents and their families in times of crisis and death.

We are a member of AIM (Action in Montgomery) which focuses on ministering to those in our community impacted by such issues as affordble housing, pedestrian safety, and youth protection.

We contribute to Shepherd's Table and the Adventist Food Pantry weekly, both local feeding programs, and once a year make meals for a local women's shelter.

We participate yearly in Capital Pride, as part of a diocesan team,  seeking justice for LGBT brothers and sisters and their families.

Through the generosity of parishioners, the Rector's Discretionary Fund is able to provide resources to those who need food, medicine, and eviction relief.

These are just some of our local outreach ministries.

Ascension Church has several global outreach ministries.

We are members of NRCAT (National Religious Coalition Against Torture.) This social justice ministry urges politicians and nations to outlaw the use of torture. Several times a year, members of Ascension attend anti-torture rallies and we actively support petitions and other efforts against torture.

We have an active Green Committee who keeps us aware of environmental issues and stewardship. Throughout the year, this committee promotes several projects to help Ascension be a "green church."

We have companion relationships with churches in Honduras, South Africa, and Liberia. Through these relationshisp we offer our prayers, resources, and sometimes take work trips to help our brothers and sisters in these communities.

We are very concerned about the situation in Sudan and actively work toward eliminating the horror of genocide in Darfur. Through petitions, financial resources, and raising community awareness, we strive to end the senseless killing. Ascension is sponsoring a resolution for continued support of the people of Sudan at the 2010 Annual Diocean Convention. Some projects we have taken on in the past have been purchasing stoves for the women in Darfur so they can cook close to home without having to travel and become victims of rape and violence.

We have purchased mosquito nets for those in Africa to help them eliminate the threat of malaria.

In the face of such disasters as earthquakes and hurricaines, we have held parish wide campaigns to raise money to send to those whose lives have been impacted.

These are some of our global outreach ministries.

Ascension is always looking for new people to become involved in outreach to minister to our hurting world...Come with  your ideas and commitment...If you want to serve the world, come and help Ascension do this important work of God......
